Is why I hold
My mothers pain
With needle in spine
With this work I chose to physically recognise and acknowledge the women in my matrilineal story and their ongoing legacy of trauma, loss and healing. These women who were taken from South India to South Africa as indentured labourers. Many were not willing and often were raped and mistreated on their journey, only to arrive at their destination and be mistreated as indentured labourers.
Along with physical and psychological violence there women also experience the violence of their culture and language being taken away thanks to the impact of colonialism and ongoing inter-generational trauma.
