Remnants of my ancestors draws from Sancintya Mohini Simpson’s maternal history of indentured labour to explore how, along with culture and tradition, memories and trauma are also passed down to the next generation, shaping who we are. In this immersive video work, Simpson uses the landscape and poetry to narrate an ongoing journey uncovering this familial history. Reflecting on the history of her family, taken from South India to Natal as indentured labourers during the late 1800s and throughout the early 1900s, Simpson inserts her mother and self into the narrative, acknowledging this history’s impact on them today.
