Loss
Is why I hold
My mothers pain
With needle in spine
My family were taken from South India to South Africa as indentured labourers to work in sugar plantations. The women in my line carried heavy burdens, and passed on a legacy of trauma, from not only physical and psychological violence but the violence of our culture and language being taken away. With this work I chose to physically recognise and acknowledge the women in my matrilineal story and their ongoing legacy of trauma, loss and healing.
